Visit the Cotton Mill built in 1784, powered by Europe’s most powerful working waterwheel will certainly stimulate your senses. The clattering and whirring of our heritage machinery and steam engines make an astonishing noise. Explore the progression of the cotton industry from the mediaeval era through to the 19th century with knowledgeable demonstrators who are happy to talk to you as you walk round. During your visit you will be given a timed slot where you can take a guided tour of the Apprentice House which housed the pauper children who worked in the Mill and learn about their tough working and home lives.
You will be able to visit the stunning riverside gardens and the mill owner’s picturesque valley retreat with seasonal displays. Explore the terraced path, riverside walk and Hermit’s caves.
